The start of February marks the beginning of the new Lunar Year, or Chinese New Year, celebrated by millions of people around the World.
To coincide with the celebrations of the Year of the Tiger, children in Pre-Prep and the Prep School have been learning about why the celebration is different to the new calendar year traditionally used in the UK. They found out that the festivities last for 16 days and begin on the first new moon of the lunar calendar, ending on the first full moon.
Mandarin Teacher, Mrs Thorn, led a special Pre-Prep assembly, where she explained the traditions associated with Chinese New Year, including the lantern festival and the types of foods enjoyed. She then quizzed the children on the content of the assembly, with correct answers earning prizes!
As part of their work on Chinese New Year, Year 3 learnt about the symbols that represent their names in their Art lesson. They thoroughly enjoyed using traditional brushes and black ink to write them out. Some pupils even went on to attempt to create the image of a tiger in ink too!
Our fantastic Catering Team also provided some scrumptious Chinese delicacies for lunch.
